University of Missouri International Center for Psychosocial Trauma.

The University of Missouri International Center for Psychosocial Trauma is an organization comprised of mental health-care professionals who travel to war-torn countries and provide training as well as conduct research in child and adolescent trauma psychiatry. Additional information about the center and the experiences of team members can be found here.

In February of 1994, a team from the University of Missouri's Department of Psychiatry traveled to the besieged city of Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, to train teachers and mental health professionals to help children caught in the crossfire of war. Thus began the establishment of the University of Missouri-Columbia International Center for Psychosocial Trauma (UMICPT).

UMICPT provides consultation, training, and direct therapeutic services to national and international communities through medical facilities, schools, and other institutions. Faculty members recruit and train rapid response teams of trauma experts to intervene in national and international crises events and natural disasters.

In 1998, due to overwhelming demands for its services, an organization to support UMICPT was established. It became known as the International Medical and Educational Trust, (IMET). IMET is a 501(C)-3 fund-raising organization that supports UMICPT and other projects. Since 1994, UMICPT has provided on-site training to more than 6,500 teachers, mental health professionals, and volunteers who are now equipped to help children that suffer from trauma.
